CATHOLIC BIBLE INSTITUTE GOALS

  • to grow in knowledge and appreciation of God's Word
  • to foster a Catholic understanding of the study of Scripture
  • to integrate Bible Study with prayer and Christian living
  • to provide formation and training for parish-based Bible study facilitators

The goal of the Catholic Bible Institute is to provide formation and training for parish-based Bible Study leaders. The Catholic Bible Institute provides a learning experience surrounded by group sharing and prayer. A variety of methods of instruction appropriate to adult learning will be presented by a team of facilitators. These include:

  • presentation by qualified Biblical instructors
  • small group discussion
  • praying of scripture
  • monthly reading and writing assignments on scripture passages, lecture and Biblical commentaries.

Doug Leal, Coordinator and Consultant for Adult Faith Formation and Young Adult Ministry at the Office of Religious Education. Doug Leal is the ORE staff member who convenes the CBI coordinating team and is responsible for coordination of the Catholic Bible Institute.


 

Melinda Evangelista is an Administrative Assistant at the Office of Religious Education.

Cindy Lambrix is an Administrative Assistant for registration and enrollment records for CBI.

Barbara Murphy has a Master of Arts in Theology (concentration in Scripture) from Loyola Marymount University. She is a RCIA Director at St. Paul the Apostle Parish and teaches in the LMU Extension program. Barbara is a  member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the Catholic Biblical Association.

Kay Murdy has a Masters in Religious Studies from Mount St. Mary's College. She is a founding member of the Catholic Bible Institute, and is a member of the coordinating and teaching staff of CBI. Kay teaches in parishes and archdiocesan programs. She writes a monthly column for Ministry and Liturgy magazine, and is the author of five books on spirituality and the Bible.

Bob Murdy is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University and has been involved in parish ministry for over 40 years. He is a founding member of the Catholic Bible Institute and works primarily in the area of administrative support.

Dorothy King is a founding member of the Catholic Bible Institute. She has received certificates in Pastoral Studies and Bible Studies from Orange Catechetical Institute and Loyola Marymount University. Her late husband Bob was a founding member and served in the tape ministry since the beginning of the Bible Institute.

Manny Carrillo is a graduate of the Catholic Bible Institute and has served in his parish's RCIA and bible study programs. Manny coordinates the audio tape ministry for the Institute.

Kay Harter is a graduate of the Catholic Bible Institute and is a Master Catechist in the Los Angeles Archdiocese. Kay will be organizing the Third Year Practicum for those seeking certification.

Steve Picard is a graduate of the Catholic Bible Institute and has served in parish ministries including youth, liturgy, music, Confirmation preparation, and adult catechesis. He has served as coordinator of the Scripture Study program at St. Jerome Parish for 10 years. Steve is currently working toward a Masters degree in Theology at Loyola Marymount University.
