EASTERN LITURGY LINKS
In his Apostolic Letter Orientale Lumen John Paul II has stated the Catholic position on the value of the Eastern heritage:
Since the ancient tradition of the Eastern Churches is an integral part of the heritage of Christ's Church, the first need for Catholics is to be familiar with that tradition, so as to be nourished by it and to encourage the process of unity in the best way possible for each.
ICONOGRAMS:
http://www.iconograms.org/
"Icon," from the Greek word
ikona, means "image" -- painted panels with representations of saints that decorate churches and are used in worship in the Eastern Christian tradition. This Web site offers more than 200 visually rich electronic images of icons that can be sent via e-mail as cards to mark major Christian feast days, holidays, name days, sacraments, and other occasions. The site is a service of the Department of Internet Ministries for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

Experts say Catholics still don't read
the Bible regularly
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- While it may be a best-seller,
the Bible still is not regularly read, nor has it become an integral part
of many Catholics' lives, said a panel of biblical experts.
"Unfortunately, it must be said, there is still little Bible in the
lives of the faithful," said Italian Bishop Vincenzo Paglia, president of
the Catholic Bible Federation. Bishop Paglia,
together with a number of biblical experts, spoke at a Vatican press
conference Sept. 8 to present an upcoming international congress
commemorating the 40th anniversary of "Dei Verbum," the Second Vatican
Council document on Scripture and divine revelation.
The five-day conference gathered more
than 400 biblical experts from all over the world. Its aims included
pinpointing the current challenges and problems in making people aware of
the importance of the Bible. In divine
revelation, "God is talking to us as friends," said the cardinal.
The word of God is not an intellectual treatise on "supernatural
reality or arcane doctrine," he said; it is "person-to-person
communication" with God's loving voice speaking directly to the
individual.
The secretary-general of the Catholic Bible Federation, Alexander
Schweitzer, said the church needs to do more than just make the Bible
available to people; it needs, "at the same time, to provide the ways and
means (for people) to know how to use it."

Little Rock Scripture Study
is designed to bring people to a greater understanding of the Bible, an awareness of God's living presence in Sacred Scripture, and an appreciation of how the Bible can be applied to daily life.
The exegetical basis of Little Rock Scripture Study (LRSS) is that which is found in
Dei Verbum (Vatican II document on Sacred Scripture). Leaders and participants receive direction in the Roman Catholic Church's approach to biblical understanding and interpretation. The use of acceptable translations of the Bible, along with footnotes and cross-references, Catholic commentaries, and wrap-up lectures by qualified speakers, helps to make this a uniquely Catholic experience. With emphasis on small group prayer and faith-sharing, LRSS is not only informational but formational as well. Ultimately, LRSS encourages a way of life that can lead to real and lifelong conversion.

Study at
Tantur Ecumenical Institute
for Theological Studies in Jerusalem
History:
During Vatican II, Pope Paul VI discovered the importance of dialogue
with other faiths. Some of the Protestant observers were very
significant as resources during the Council. Wanting to keep that
dialogue going, the Pope turned to his resourceful American friend, Fr.
Theodore Hesbergh, CSC, of Notre Dame for help. Eventually, a committee
decided to look for property in Jerusalem--and found an abandoned
hospital run by the Knights of Malta. The Vatican bought the property
and Fr. Hesbergh financed the building of an educational institute as an
extension of Notre Dame University. Originally, it was to serve
scholars--promoting both research and dialogue among them. For that
reason, it has one of the most developed theological libraries in the
Middle East.
"Fifth
Gospel": Since its opening in 1972 it tried other programs with limited success.
Twelve years ago it added the dimension of studying the "Fifth
Gospel"--that is, the land and its people--as a context for
understanding the Bible and promoting inter-religious dialogue for
leaders of various Christian denominations. While many guided excursions
are provided, the focus is not only the archeological remains, but also
study the "living stones"—the local Eastern and Western
churches in their difficult situation as minorities who share land and
life with Jews and Muslims. The course is an ecumenical experience in
itself. The participants — from many Christian traditions — form a
learning community, not only in the classroom, but also in sharing meals
and conversation, traveling together and praying together. The community
meets every evening for worship prepared by an ecumenically blended
group of residents. Structured programs are one, two or three months
long. It has continues to serve scholars and provide a neutral place for
dialogue among Palestinians and Jews.
Ecumenical Background: One of the original committee members for
establishing an ecumenical institute, the first Secretary for Christian
Unity in the Vatican, and later, rector at Tantur for twelve years is
Fr. Tom Stransky, CSP. He continues as teacher and hermit at Tantur,
asking us to reflect on ecumenism with questions that include: What are
my images of the present situation of Christian unity and divisions
among the churches? What do I understand by "ecumenism"? by
the "ecumenical movement?" Do I have any images of the
"final product" or desired "end" of the ecumenical
movement"? What are my motivations for being
"ecumenical"? What are the most pressing ecumenical issues.
e.g., spiritual; doctrinal/ethical; pastoral?
The campus: Tantur Institute is situated on the main road between
Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Tantur welcomes scholars and students to pursue
their research and writing for longer or shorter periods, and offers
programs of continuing education and spiritual renewal for parish
clergy, teachers and other church workers.
